Reminder and goth stuff... [Oct. 19th, 2007|04:49 pm]

Thing the first:

Evening of Eastern Dance, including Bollywood, Bangra and Bellydance at City Limits dance studio, Sheffield, tomorrow night from 7:30pm.

Thing the second:

For anyone who may be heading to Whitby for the Goth Weekend, and who may find themselves there on a Wednesday evening, there's an open level dance class held in Trinity Church from 7pm - 9pm. Just in case you can't survive without a dance fix for that long ;) Not sure if I'll be going along myself yet, this rather depends on the opinions of the other bellydancers in my crowd, they may decide that the usual pub grub and beer is more the flavour of the weekend!

However, even if you aren't there for the whole week, or do select beer over dancing, then I will still recommend a trip to Gutsy Gingers Eastern Bazaar, just over the road and down the lane from The Elsinore.

Some events coming up in or around Sheffield in the next few months...

A night of Bellydance and Bollywood at City Limits Dance school on Saturday 20th October. There is a small possibility that the class I attend on Thursday evenings will be performing at this event.

Belly Rock charity bellydance event at the Ramada Jarvis hotel in Leeds on Saturday 3rd November.

Boomshanka Tribal will be holding a hafla on Saturday 17th November. More details when I'm 100% sure where the venue for this will be!

Bedazzle charity bellydance event at Yeadon Town Hall on Sunday 25th November. Barnsley Arabic Dance group will be performing at this event.

I just got my first pair of gorgeous isis wings on Thursday, so am sure you will forgive me for being obsessed with things to do isis wings at the moment. :) I trawled through some videos on youtube to watch some of great dancers showcasing their skills and dance with this huge props and thought that some of you might be interested to see. They look so impressive! These are the videos. If you have one to share, do post the links in comments to share! :)

Spelling? [Aug. 15th, 2007|10:57 pm]

[Current Mood |confusedconfused]

I've never been very good at spelling, so I've been trying to check the spelling on some words associated with bellydance, and there doesn't seem to be a standard spelling of many of them.

Is this because a large number of other people on the internet also cannot spell, or is it because there is not 'correct' spelling of these words?

Is it Hagella or Hagellah?
Is it Beladi, Beledi or Baladi?
Is it Saeedi or Saidi?

Any ideas? Where might I go to find out?

Nearly every dancer that I know has had problems grasping this, and nearly every dancer I've spoken to has been taught it in a different way, from "walk like a duck" to "shimmy and walk" (all easier said than done, as I'm sure you'll agree!)

I was initially taught the 'John Wayne' style, step and let your knee bend so that your hip drops, then as you get used to this add a wobble between steps so that the overall effect is of a powerful and very grounded shimmy-walk.

Sometimes this worked, and sometimes I just couldn't make myself do it, and certainly I couldn't do it fast! We used to practise to 'Chicky' by Oojami, and that's just way too fast!

Then at JOY last year I did a workshop with Kay Taylor and she taught me using the break down of steps into 'down, tak-tak down, tak-tak', so your leading hip drops then hits out to the side as you lift the other foot then you hit up with the following hip which brings this into position to perform the following down step. Since then I've had no problems with this step apart from learning to make the move smaller so that I can make it faster.

So how were you taught it? Can you do it? Do you have any tips for those of us still perfecting it? Do you know anything else interesting about it?

Workshop reports [Aug. 13th, 2007|12:44 pm]

Blimey, I've been a bit lax! No report on my trip to Newcastle for the Farha Festival!

Ok, brief report on that now then...
NewcastleCollapse )

OK, OK, I'm not very good at doing 'brief'!

More recently, yesterday I took part in 2 workshops run by Candi of BADA in Tankersley. The first was Exercise to Improve and was a series of exercises, broken down to concentrate on specific parts of the body. Each series of exercises is designed to improve the strength and flexibility of a part of the body, and therefore improve your dance in that area. The second was Shamadan, which is a dance performed with a candelabra balanced on your head. The very lovely kerida_eira drove us all out to Tankersley for the workshops (Thank you!), "us all" being soul_rider, ju_bear and myself.

Performances (x-posted to my own journal) [Jul. 8th, 2007|02:16 pm]

OMG! I actually did it! I got up on a stage in front of loads of people and I danced! And I didn't make a total fool of myself doing it!

Yesterday was the South Yorkshire Festival, held in the grounds of Wortley Hall on the outskirts of Sheffield. Barnsley Arabic Dance Association performed 3 pieces, and for the first time, I danced with them. The weather even kindly obliged us with the sun coming out for the first time in weeks!

brief(ish) run-down...Collapse )

Now I'm enjoying a nice fresh salad picked from my own garden, and looking forward to an evening in with gothicgoverness and talma watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in preparation for Thursday, when I have tickets to see Order of the Phoenix :)

Gothla videos [Jun. 24th, 2007|02:33 pm]

As promised, a few videos of the performances from the Friday night at Gothla...

Sashi

Tempest

Ariellah

Mistress Olivia

The dance that Sashi is performing here is the same choreography that she taught us in the Saturday workshop.

Tempest's dance is completely free-form, and doubly impressive due to jet-lag!

There were loads more performances than this, but these are all that's up on YouTube so far...
